Introduction

We are looking to recruit a permanent Health and Safety Officer to work for United Pharmaceutical Distributors (UPD). The role will be based in our Cape Town branch and will report to the Operations Manager.

Job description
Role Purpose:

To co-ordinate, support and advise the business on all aspects with regards to health and safety and to establish, manage and monitor standards, processes, communications, training and systems to ensure all responsibilities associated with health and safety within UPD are adhered to.

Role Objectives:

To Perform the full role of SHE / OHASA officer:
Manage environmental, safety and health system.
Manage legislative compliance.
Manage preparedness and readiness to all safety and health protocols.
Co-ordinate all contractors on site according to existing and new regulations.
Ensure availability and competent health and safety representatives exist.
Ensure SHE visual presence, reporting and analysis.
Conduct emergency drills and scenario based training to key personnel.

OHS Implementation and management:

Ensure all the findings are actioned and closed off.
Ensure monthly SOP and tool box talks are completed.
Ensure ladders are checked on a daily basis and defects are rectified.
Ensure all registers are kept and are document controlled.
Ensure all the health and safety meeting are held according to the regulation.
Assist in the management of continuity of basic utilities in the vent of shortage or downtime.
Promote a safer and healthier environment in the workplace.
Ensure risk assessments are adhered to.
Ensure that incidents and diseases are reported and investigated.
Verify compliance to safety, health and environmental requirement in the workplace.
Perform basic life support and first aid procedures.
Schedule emergency preparedness drills and form part of the emergency preparedness and response team.
Order and distribute PPE to the staff members and keep records of issue.
Ensure that the correct PPE is worn at all times.
Maintain all OHS related records.
Ensure all OHS related signage is available and visible.
Ensure good relationships with all the external suppliers.
Form part of the safety committee meetings.
Assist with developing OHS system , including policies, procedures, and manuals
Carry out induction with all visitors, contractors and employees.
Perform all SHE activities.

House Keeping:

Ensure all areas are sufficiently clean.
Ensure the perimeter / yard is kept clean.
Ensure the servicing of the SHE bins on a weekly basis.
Ensure we have sufficient cleaning consumables in stock.
Ensure Deep-Cleaning of the Ablution areas.
Ensure carpet /chairs and high access cleaning are done according to the schedule.
Ensure that fumigation of the premises is carried out quarterly.
Ensure man-up cages are kept clean.
Check all cleaning related delivery notes against orders.

Contractors on site:

Maintain the safety files of subcontractors.
Issue work permits to all the subcontractors on site.
Ensure all subcontractors adhere to the company policies.
Ensure baseline risk assessments are performed.
Ensure a snag list is completed after all the construction on site.
Ensure a certificate of completion is issued.
Ensure all necessary documents are submitted to Finance for payments.

Minimum requirements
Education:

Essential: Matric
Essential: Relevant 3 year Degree / Diploma in Health and Safety Management or equivalent

Experience:

Essential: Minimum 3 years recent and relevant experience as a Health and Safety Officer
Essential: Experience in maintenance of safety processes and procedures in a factory environment
Desirable: Experience in a FMCG / Wholesale environment

Job Knowledge:

Microsoft packages.
Advanced knowledge of statutory requirements / legislation as it relates to health and safety.
Advanced knowledge of injury management.
SHE management systems and reporting.
